How do you get an address?

Friday, May 25th, 2007

Looking at all the blogs of other folks, I was deeply taken with how nicely they managed to get the blog running under their domain.

I’ve my own vanity space, but wanted to experiment under another name and not be quite so recogniseable.

I needed a domain name. That’s what people will type in their browser, or the name of the site

There are loads of places to get one; for some people (Google Is Your Friend) GIYF , but I knew of a couple of others. I went to a company called 1&1 for this name, because a friend had recommended them.

In the past, I have also used Just the Name, and Registron. I’ve also used domain names supplied by my Internet Service Provider (ISP), but then you can end up being a bit tied, and one lot tried to charge me more than £100 to release the domain name. Fotunately, they were later taken over, and I got my name back for peanuts.

The names cost between £5-10 for 2 years; ample time to have a play about.
Once you have the name, you’ll need to know where to point it.

That’s another post.

So, successful in the end…

It took a while, but I’m finally here.

It looks like I’ve managed to get

  • hosting
  • domain name
  • working installation of Wordpress.

Why, you ask?

I work in IT, and decided *I* needed to understand a little more about how easy or difficult it is to establish newer style web presences.

I’ve had vanity sites, and even my own domain name for years - mostly used for email.
I developed my vanity site to use Cascading Style Sheets/XHTML, but realised that - while fun - was harder to update than a blog.

If you’re reading this, think yourself luck you’re not trying to find your way round my joomla site - quite why I decided I neede to learn a CMS in now beyond me.

Mostly, this is designed to be a voyage of discovery - for me - and I’m looking forward to learning how to tweak Wordpress…
